Wellbeing and Engagement

Wellbeing and Engagement

At ACPS, we believe that students learn best when they feel safe, connected, valued and supported. Our approach to wellbeing and engagement is centred on fostering positive relationships, creating inclusive learning environments and supporting every student to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.
We recognise that wellbeing and learning are closely connected. Through a whole-school approach, we work collaboratively with students, staff, families and the wider community to promote positive mental health, resilience, engagement and a strong sense of belonging.

Positive Learning Environments

ACPS implements a School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework that promotes consistent expectations and positive behaviours across all settings. Our school-wide expectations of Safe, Respectful and Responsible guide student behaviour and decision-making.
Students are explicitly taught expected behaviours and are supported to:

  • Develop positive relationships with peers and adults
  • Demonstrate respect, responsibility and safety
  • Build self-awareness and self-regulation skills
  • Resolve conflicts respectfully and appropriately
  • Contribute positively to the school community

Social and Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning is embedded across the school and supported through evidence-informed practices, including the Berry Street Education Model. Students are provided with opportunities to develop:

  • Emotional awareness and regulation
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Empathy and positive relationship skills
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strategies for managing challenges and maintaining wellbeing

Classroom routines and wellbeing practices help students feel connected, regulated and ready to learn each day.

Student Voice, Agency and Leadership

At ACPS, we value student voice and believe students should play an active role in shaping their learning and school experience.
Students are encouraged to:

  • Set learning goals and reflect on their progress
  • Provide feedback about their learning experiences
  • Participate in decision-making opportunities
  • Contribute to school improvement initiatives
  • Take on leadership roles through Student Representative Voice (SRV), School Captains and other leadership opportunities

These experiences help students develop confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of ownership over their learning and school community.

Inclusion and Support

We are committed to ensuring every student is known, valued and supported. Our wellbeing team works collaboratively with teachers, families and external agencies to provide targeted support for students who may require additional assistance.
Support may include:

  • Individual learning and wellbeing plans
  • Student Support Group (SSG) meetings
  • Disability Inclusion processes and supports
  • Attendance and engagement support
  • Small group programs and targeted interventions
  • Access to specialist services and external agencies

Through early identification and responsive support, we aim to ensure all students can access learning, experience success and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Our Goal

Across all year levels, our wellbeing and engagement approach aims to develop resilient, confident and connected learners who feel safe, valued and empowered to achieve their personal best. By fostering positive relationships, supporting student wellbeing and promoting engagement in learning, we prepare students to thrive both at school and beyond.
