Digital Technologies and Design Technologies
At Arnolds Creek Primary School, students participate in specialist Digital Technologies and Design Technologies programs that inspire creativity, innovation and problem-solving through authentic, hands-on learning. Following the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0), students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to investigate, design, create and evaluate solutions for real-world challenges.
We believe every child can be a designer, creator and innovator. Through exploration, collaboration and purposeful learning experiences, students develop computational thinking, design thinking and practical skills while building confidence using a range of digital tools, technologies and materials.
Students in grades 3 to 6 participate in weekly specialist lessons in well-equipped learning spaces where they explore coding, robotics, game design, food technologies, sustainable design and digital creation. Learning is practical, engaging and connected to authentic contexts, encouraging students to think critically, communicate effectively and reflect on their learning.
Authentic Learning Experiences
Students apply their learning through meaningful projects that combine creativity with real-world problem solving.
A highlight of the program is the Year 3 – 4 Bloxels EDU Game Design Project, where students design and create their own video games for a chosen audience. They investigate user needs, develop and test ideas, and refine their games through feedback, strengthening their creativity, computational thinking and understanding of the design process.
Students also explore emerging technologies through innovative learning experiences. In 2026, Arnolds Creek Primary School is excited to begin trialling Minecraft Education as part of the Australian ESports League (AEL) National Minecraft Competition 2026, providing opportunities for students to collaborate, solve authentic challenges and apply digital skills in an engaging virtual environment.
Another program highlight is our school gardening project, where students investigate sustainable food production by planting, growing and caring for seasonal crops. Using digital tools to collect and analyse plant growth data, students combine Design Technologies, Digital Technologies and Science to make informed decisions about caring for their crops. Once harvested, produce is shared with members of our local community, fostering responsibility, sustainability and community connection.
Students also develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles through practical food and nutrition experiences. They explore healthy eating guidelines, interpret food labels and apply their knowledge by designing and preparing digital healthy food solutions.
Each year, students celebrate their achievements at our STEAM NIGHT, where families and members of the school community are invited to experience student projects and learn about the design process behind their work. This authentic audience provides students with the opportunity to showcase their creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills.
What Students Learn
Throughout the program, students develop skills across both Digital Technologies and Design Technologies.
Students build an understanding of digital systems, exploring how devices, software and networks work together while learning to use technology safely, responsibly and effectively.
Using design and computational thinking, students identify problems, generate ideas, develop algorithms, create prototypes and refine solutions through testing and evaluation. They explore coding, robotics, multimedia and game design while developing logical thinking, resilience and confidence as creative problem-solvers.
Developing responsible digital citizens is a key focus throughout the program. Students learn to use technology safely, respectfully and ethically while building positive online habits, understanding cyber safety and maintaining a responsible digital footprint.
At Arnolds Creek Primary School, we aim to develop learners who are creative, confident and capable of applying technology and design thinking to make a positive difference. Our Digital Technologies and Design Technologies programs equip students with the skills to think critically, collaborate effectively and embrace the opportunities of an ever-changing world, inspiring curiosity, innovation and a lifelong love of learning.
