Science
At Arnolds Creek Primary School, students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in a specialist Science program that inspires curiosity, encourages inquiry, and develops a deeper understanding of the world around them. Our program follows the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and is designed to foster critical thinking through hands on investigations and real world learning experiences.
Children are naturally curious, and at Arnolds Creek Primary School we believe every child is a scientist. Through exploration, observation and investigation, students are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas and discover how the physical world works.
Students participate in a one hour Science lesson each week, exploring the four strands of the Victorian Curriculum: Biology, Earth and Space Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics. Learning takes place in our well resourced and engaging Science Room, where students have access to a wide range of fascinating specimens, equipment and living animals that bring scientific concepts to life.
Each year we celebrate Science with families through our Science Show. The community shares in a hands on experience with students, parents and caregivers bringing Science to life.
Biology
Biology is the scientific study of living things. Students learn about the characteristics and needs of living organisms, life cycles, habitats and ecosystems. Our Science Room is home to some very special animal ambassadors, including two cheeky lovebirds named Chip and Dale, an entertaining blue-tongue lizard called Digger, and an inquisitive axolotl named Sunshine. These animals provide students with authentic opportunities to observe living things up close and develop an understanding of how animals are classified according to their unique features and adaptations.Gutentor Advanced Text
Earth and Space Sciences
Earth and Space Sciences introduces students to the wonders of our planet and the wider universe. Students investigate Earth’s geological features and natural processes, weather and climate, and the dynamic systems that shape our environment. They also develop an understanding of sustainability and explore how their actions can contribute to caring for our planet and creating a more sustainable future.
Chemistry
Chemistry explores the properties of matter and the changes it undergoes. Through engaging, hands-on investigations, students discover that chemical changes occur because of scientific processes, not magic! They develop an understanding of materials, mixtures and chemical reactions while building essential scientific investigation skills.
Physics
Physics helps students understand how forces, movement and energy influence the world around them. Students investigate heat, light and sound energy before progressing to the study of electrical energy in the senior years. Using electrical circuit kits, students design and build simple circuits to power motors, light bulbs and other components, developing practical problem-solving skills and an understanding of how electricity works.
At Arnolds Creek Primary School, we strive to develop lifelong learners who are curious, confident and capable of thinking scientifically. Our Science program equips students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to ask questions, think critically, solve problems and make informed decisions in an ever-changing world. Most importantly, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of science and discovery.
